With 2023 well underway, the taste in men’s cologne is starting to change. Since mid 2021, we have a few new faces on the “top sold list” thus far and it will only continue to change as the year goes on. See that list by clicking here.
If you have no time to read this article, feel free to click here and head right to the winner of the top selling cologne so far this year. We completely understand that reading this entire article can take a while.
What has been going on this year that so many people are wearing different colognes than last year? Maybe if we take a look at the recent events thus far, that will help us.
Disclaimer: This list is not 100% accurate. We take a peek at the top online retailers and from there we approximate how many they have sold collectively. If you have more questions on how we come up with this number, feel free to drop a comment below and we would love to answer them.
Along with the top 10 most sold colognes, CologneMasters will also provide a random event that has happened in 2016 in hopes that might recall a reasoning of why a particular cologne started to trend. Lets get the party started with #10.
10. Legend by Montblanc (2011)
Starting off the best selling colognes in 2016 so far is Montblanc’s legend. In 2015, this cologne came in at the #4 spot, so we see that it is starting to get less popular than it once was. Legend is non-offensive, without the similar smell of all the citrus scents that typically populate Top 10 lists.
Speaking of winning, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos were able to defeat the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 by a score of 24-10. For the people of Denver, this may have been one of the most notable things to happen this year thus far.
9. CK One by Calvin Klein
New to the list, is another classic fragrance by Calvin Klein that is not considered just a “man’s cologne” since women love it and it smells differently on them. CK One is simple, fresh, and should be worn mostly during the day.
Early in 2016, for the first time ever, Powerball exceeded 1 billion dollars. In case you were interested, that is over 31 million bottles of CK One.
8. Versace Man Eau Fraiche by Versace (2006)
Versace Man hit the list at #2 in 2022 and it’s a cologne that we are happy to see make it in 2016 as well. It is starting to drop a few spots so we will have to closely monitor to see if it will continue to show up on the list. It’s such a versatile cologne that makes it easy to wear in almost any situation.
A clean and refreshing scent with a slight hint of a spice. A wonderful casual scent for men to wear during the day.
Remember the Super Bowl halftime show where Beyonce performed? Well, she came under fire for the outfit she wore along with the backup dancers. They dressed like infamous Black Panthers and created drama with the Miami Police Department saying they would boycott the security at her next conference.
7. Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche (1982)
Drakkar Noir remains in the top 7 of the most sold colognes so far in 2016. A woody scent that filled with zest and fresh spices. This is a manly scent that is super strong and will blast you all the way back to the 80s where it began.
President Barrack Obama landed in Cuba. Like Drakkar Noir, this is a big event since no president of the United States has been there since 1928.
6. Paul Sebastian by Paul Sebastian (1979)
It’s hard not to notice that this cologne is the oldest on the top sellers list. Although it debuts on the “top sold list in 2016”, I have a feeling we won’t see the last of it since it has such a strong following of customers.
People seem to be reminded of barber shop smells when they spray Paul Sebastian. I’m talking about using Paul Sebastian cologne, not actually spraying him per say.
This is a strong masculine scent that should be worn mostly during the evening. It has a light blend of wood, spice, and sweet florals.
One of the biggest stories of the year and I’m unsure how I can make this relate to Paul Sebastian, was the 2 percenters take over of the headquarters building of the United States Fish and Wildlife. The occupation ended with a shootout with the FBI and the death of one militiaman.
5. Chrome by Azzaro (1996)
Louis Azzaro was inspired by his grandson when this scent was created. It’s a clean and fresh scent which is still something that men like to purchase when choosing a cologne.
If you were to take a peek at any news station at this point in time, it would be impossible not to be blinded by stories of Donald Trump, Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Ted Cruz.
From all of the elections so far, this year is gearing up to be one of the most memorable by a long ways with all of the crazy things that been getting said.
4. Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier (1995)
Another new entry to the list, Le Male is taking 2016 by storm. It is interesting to see what sudden surge made this cologne so popular, we hope to see it crush
Le Male, has a pretty cool looking bottle if I do say so myself. It sensual, strong, and smells amazing on men. This cologne although very simple, drives the ladies wild. This is a great cologne if you’re trying to impress that special someone.
So far in 2016, we have lost an infamous rock star and ladies man, David Bowie. He was knows as having an incredible public persona and featured his greatest album of “Let’s Dance” in 1983.
3. Eternity by Calvin Klein (1989)
This cologne is an old school fragrance, created back in the 80s that rocks some good sales today. We are happy to see it debut as #3 and are excited to see where it finishes the year at!
The name Eternity makes sense for this cologne since you can wear it all day every day and it won’t get old.
North Korea hit the news already in 2016 with a successful underground H-Bomb test. This test is their fourth overall which received international condemnation.
2. Cool Water by Davidoff (1988)
A classic scent that still has a strong appeal today. It’s aromatic, fresh, and contains jasmine which can help reduce stress. Lucky for us, this classic scent continues to rock the #2 spot after a great run in 2022.
Mostly a summer fragrance and can be worn day or night.
Cool Water, unfortunately, finishes 2nd in the “top selling cologne” world. With this unfortunate finish, we have to remember what happened this year when Google’s DeepMind program played and defeated the world champion Go player.
Hopefully, Cool Water by Davidoff can gain some of this AI to help move into the #1 spot by the end of the year.
